Coopers’ Members Craft Their Own Casks at Theakston Brewery
The latest group of Coopers’ Members visited Theakston Brewery in Masham on the 7th February for a hands-on cooperage experience, crafting their own casks under the expert guidance of Liveryman and Journeyman Cooper, Euan Findlay.
The day began with a guided tour of the brewery, offering members an insight into Theakston’s brewing heritage and production process which was followed by a detailed briefing on cooperage techniques and what to expect during the practical session ahead.
Under Euan’s instruction, members were able to experience the skill, precision and teamwork required to raise a cask - an opportunity both challenging and rewarding. The visit was made all the more notable by the participation of Court Assistant Sonya Zuckerman, who is believed to be the first Past Mistress Cooper to have made a cask.
Court Assistant Alan Roberts joined the day to present a Coopers' Shield to Euan to add to the striking collection he has on display at the cooperage.
The visit proved to be an engaging and memorable day, strengthening members’ appreciation of the craft and its enduring importance within the brewing tradition.
