In mid-December 2025, the final group of the year of Coopers’ Members travelled north to Masham for a memorable visit to Theakstons Cooperage, where they spent the day immersed in the traditional craft of coopering.
Under the expert guidance of Liveryman and Cooper Euan Findlay, members had the rare opportunity to create their very own casks from start to finish. The experience offered a fascinating insight into the skill, precision and physical effort required in this historic trade. As the photographs show, coopering is demanding work — but it was approached with enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed by all involved.
The day provided not only hands-on learning, but also a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship that underpins both the coopering profession and the wider brewing heritage for which Masham is renowned.
Our sincere thanks go to Euan Findlay for his generosity, patience and willingness to share his expertise with a group of complete novices. It was an engaging, rewarding and truly memorable experience for everyone who took part.
It goes without saying the day was rounded off with a trip to the local hostelry for a pint of the local Theakstons' ale and where they tried...and failed to assemble the pieces of a cask. Just think 3-D jigsaw with added complications.
This is a unique opportunity for Coopers' Company members to experience who can then say they have been a Cooper in the true sense of the word for a day. If you are a member and would like more details, please email events@cooperscompany.co.uk
