The Coopers’ Company held its annual ‘Cloker Service’ at St Botolph without Bishopsgate last week.
Henry Cloker, Grocer, died in 1574 leaving a Will dated 10th March 1573 which remains at the heart of this Thanksgiving Service. In summary, Henry Cloker bequeathed houses in Crooked Lane, London to the Cooper’s Company upon trust they pay the Grocers’ Company 40 shillings each year. The Will is read at this service by The Clerk of the Company which someone will always time. Never less than 10mins!
Thanks was also given to those who have generously donated to the Stave Group over the last 12 months and will continue to do so. A number of members were presented with their Staves by the Master before the service. The Staves are hand crafted by Liveryman and Journeyman Cooper Euan Findlay.
The service was led by The Revd David Armstrong from St Botolph and the preacher was The Revd David Cloake of St Mary with St Alban, Parish Church of Teddington & whose daughter Rebekah is an Apprentice to PM Leigh Johnson.
The Master and Mistress Grocer attended in accordance with the upheld tradition honouring Henry Cloker.
We were joined by the Choir of the Cooper’s Company & Coborn School Choir with their stunning singing as always. The School Captain and Vice Captains assisted with greeting of guests, which they did admirably – a credit to themselves and the school.
A wonderful supper, prepared by Cole & Hough followed in the Church Hall after which The Master welcomed the six School Captains as Student Members of the Coopers’ Company, presenting them with certificates and company ties.
We continue the tradition, with us giving The Master Grocer £2 which he duly donates back to the Coopers’ Company placing in the poor box.
