Barrel racing in the City

A Barrel of Laughs: Coopers Company Launches Inaugural Cask Race

On Saturday 25th June, livery companies, military organisations and corporations from across the City took to Guildhall Yard, the historic site of London’s Roman amphitheatre, for a chance of racing glory.

After eighteen months of planning, the day had arrived. Blessed by glorious weather, the course was set, Young Freemen marshals were robed and three barrels from Hook Norton Brewery were ready to be put through their paces.

The schedule of the day was broken down into three ‘pools’, each containing four teams. The winner of Pool One was the Young Coopers. Pool Two was captured by Coopers and Coborn School Staff, with help from PE teachers! The final Pool Three was won by the Yeoman Warders which included the Company’s Deputy Beadle Yeoman Warder Scott Kelly.

Races were fiercely fought and so much so, hoops from the barrels ended up rolling off during the race. Fortunately, the Guild of Young Freemen were on hand to conduct live Coopering to repair barrels between races.

In the grand finale, the pool winners chose their fastest racer to run again with the team who completed the course in the fastest time being crowned racing champions. Three teams raced with each taking a different approach and all suffering on the 180 degrees turn for the return shuttle.

The results were very close with only half a second separating the winning team from the runners-up. After a day of racing the Young Coopers team, fresh from its recent victory in the Young Inter-Livery Quiz, won the cask race. A big congratulations to Christian Kitley from the Young Coopers’ team for obtaining the fastest time.

The event had two main objectives: 1) publicise the coopering trade and Company 2) raise money for the Company’s charitable arm, the CIO.

On all objectives the event was a tremendous success. Twelve teams entered, representing the different facets of the City; funds were successfully raised for charity; and interest has been peaked among corporate teams, leading to expressions of interest in joining the Company.

The Cask Race Committee would like to thank the teams that entered who overcame the largest rail strikes in decades to support the Coopers’ Company. The event itself would not have taken place without the support of the Court, the Clerk’s office and the Society.  The Committee is incredibly grateful for the Company’s backing in this new type of event.
