Henry Cloker, like Nicholas Gibson, was a member of the Grocers' Company but his
family were closely connected with the Coopers', his father, John Cloker, being
Master in 1533 and 1535. In his Will, dated 1573, Henry left two houses in the
City to the Company, the major part of the proceeds from which were to be used
to augment the salaries of the schoolmaster and the usher at the Ratcliff School.
Responsibility for the upkeep of the houses lay with the Company but in the case
of any default, ownership of the houses passed to the Grocers' Company. The Will
also stipulates that a sermon be preached by a learned man and that part of the
Will describing the bequests be read by the Parson or his Deputy at an Annual
Service to be held on New Year's Day. This Service of Commemoration of Henry Cloker
has recently been expanded to include Thanksgiving for the lives of the other
Benefactors of the Company. It is now held in October each year at the Church
of St. Magnus the Martyr by London Bridge. The Will is read by the Clerk and the
music is provided by the Choir of the Coopers' Company and Coborn School. Attended
by the Master, Wardens and Court of Assistants, and by the Master and Clerk of
the Grocers' Company, the Cloker Service is one of the main Company functions
to which all Liverymen receive an invitation.
